Let’s just make sure that we’re clear on what we mean when we use the term ‘e- learning’. To start with it is also known as digital learning and also online learning. Those of you who have been around for slightly longer may also know it as computer based training or CBT.
At Learning Perspectives we stick with the term e-learning as this is more internationally recognised.
E-learning is commonly thought of as ‘click next’ learning, and whilst this self-paced approach is an extremely valuable and proven method of e-learning the term covers training approaches that are far broader than this. In fact, what all of these names refer to is any learning delivered using electronic methods.
In its broadest sense, whenever you go to the Internet to research information you are actually e-learning. To help you get a clearer understanding of what this looks like - in the diagram below we look at some face-to-face methods of learning and consider what a digital approach might be to these. The list is not exhaustive, but should illustrate what we are trying to explain:
What you can see is that with a
bit of creative thinking there are a number of ways that e-learning can support
you to achieve your learning aim. These approaches can be used standalone or
can be blended to create a delivery approach that works for a wide range of
learner preferences and technical capabilities. They can also be successfully
blended with face-to-face components.
Technology is moving quickly and with some creative thinking there are many ways that you can increase learning opportunities to your colleagues. Wherever they are.
